Oxytocin is a hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain. It’s thought to be a driving force behind attraction and caregiving and even controls key aspects of the reproductive system, childbirth and lactation. Amazing!

New research has found that oxytocin changes the way the adult brain responds to baby laughter- this is uniquely rewarding for parents and caregivers. Specifically, oxytocin has been found to enhance the synaptic connections between brain regions involved in reward and emotion. This means that the brain response to oxytocin may be important for eliciting quality affection and responsive caregiving.

Basically when oxytocin levels are up, stress level are reduced! And in reality, these are beautiful moments where time stands still and deep bonding blooms. This is how children develop and thrive!

When we start thinking about how this influences the bonds of attachment- laughter is a perfect example of delight- a key foundation for building secure attachment!

Delight is mutual joy and pleasure within the parent-child relationship; it’s about reflecting the experience our children have within ourselves and saying “I watched you play and I loved it” just as much as they enjoyed playing. It is equal fascination in the outcomes of learning and exploration. Delight is communicated with our eyes, bodies and energy- it is felt through laughter and hugs. Delight is showing unconditional love and appreciation for who they are as a little human. Delight fills their soul more than anything.

Babies are born yearning for a safe relationship filled with joy. In those moments, you can almost see those neurons firing!
Do you need an oxytocin boost? Watch here for some love!
